T ranslator's N ote
This is a tra nsl ation of th e semina r that j acqu es La can delivered at the Law
Faculty, Place d u Panth eon , in 19 6 9-70 ,
in
the unsettled aftermath of the
e
v
entful year of
196 ft
The o rigina l text is the version o f the semina r edited
b y j acques-Alain M iller and published by Edition s du SeuiI.
Quite apart from the usual challenges fac ing any translator of La can into
English, this seminar presents sp ecial di fficulties of
its
own . Ce rtain
(If
them
call
for sp ecia l co m ment.
l'n n.>ers
Beginning with
the titl e
itself,
l'enven ,
translat ed here as " the oth er side,"
also carries th e m eaning of " back," "verso," " lining," " und ersi d e," " flip-
side," "underneath," " bad side't-cconn orano ns of the unseen, even th e
obscene, wh ich " the o ther side" in English on ly barely suggests.
Iathouse
What
is
striking about this m ad e- u p word, pronounced L\-TOOZE, is its
suffix,
-ouse,
wh ich can be used to tu rn ordi nary words into slang a nd in for-
mal langua ge.Thus,
u ne bague ,
a
ring, beco mes
une baguouse; fa (prison) cen-
trale
becomes
fa
centro u.>ej
an d so o n. With "l ath ouse " La can is obviously
having a b it o f
fun
with hi s objec t
a.
astude
This neologism , tra nslated as "astudie d," attempts to work the
" a"
of
"object
a"
into the term " stu de n t" or " studied" to con vey something of the
place the student occupies in th e university d isco u r se .
alethosphere
This neologism, cons tr ucted as it is from the G reek words for "truth" and
for "ball," "globe," or " sphere," is plain eno ugh for the English reader .
Lacan introduces it
to
refer to the means by which something can
be reco rd ed at a distance , whe ther in the form of light or sound waves.
The alethosp he re ob vious ly ex tends beyond th e limits of the earth's
atmosphere.
