Anandmeansbliss,blissfulness,andbuddhameanstheawakenedstateofconsciousness–the
utterlyawakenedstatewhenthereisnomoreanyunconsciousdesire,whenthereisnodarkcorner
left,whenallisconsciousnesswithin...whentheconsciousgoesonspreading,spreading,and
takesoverthewholeterritoryoftheunconscious.
Justaveryminutepartisconsciousnow,justasmallpotential;itissmall,butitisverypotential.Itis
likeasmalllamp,butitismorepotentialthanthewholedarknessofthewholeuniversebecausethe
darknessisimpotent,thedarknesscannotwinoverit.Howsoeverlongittakesforthelighttowin,
thefinalvictoryiswiththelight,becauselightisanddarknessisnot.Darknessisjusttheabsence
oflight;itdoesnotexistinitsownright.Ithasnopositivebeing,itisjusttheabsence.
Absencecannotwin,onlythepresencecanwin–butdarknessisvast.Itisbig,itishuge,itsvery
hugenesscreatesfear;andthestill,smallvoiceoftheconsciousisjustasmallrayinthedarknight
ofthesoul.Butithasthepossibilityofaseed.Yes,theseedissmall,butitcarriestremendous
possibilities.Onceitstartsexplodingitsbeingthennothingcanpreventit.
Anddarknessisimpotent,Isay,becauseitcannotpreventlight;itcannotevenfightwithlight.The
momentyoubringalampintothedarkroomthedarknesssimplydisappears.Itneverevengivesa
singlefight;itisverycowardly.Itcannotfacelightsohowcanitfightlight?Itisthere,enormously
there,whenthelightisnotthere.Itlooksbigwhenthelightisnotpresent,butwhenthelightisthere
itissimplynot.
Soaverysmallpartofhumanbeingsisconscious–andthatisthemisery,becausethehuman
mindistheonlymindontheearthwhichisinconflict.Theanimalsarcnotinconflict,thetrees
arenotinconflict,therocksarenotinconflict,becausetheyhaveaunitarybeing.Theyarefully

unconscioussothedualitydoesnotexist.Inawaythereisgreatsilenceandgreatpeace,butthat
peaceisnotworthmuch.
Whenmanbecomespeacefullikeatree,itissimilarinawayandnotsimilaratall.Whenman
becomespeacefulitmeanshebecomestotallyconscious,theunconsciousnessdisappears;again
anewunityhasarisenonahigherplane.Thetreeexistsasaunityonalowerplane:allisdark
andthereisunity.Buddhaexistsonthehighestplane:allislightandthereisunity.Andbetween
thosetwoisman–themajorpartofhisbeingbeingpulledbytheunconsciousandjustasmall
fragmentbeingpulledbytheconscious.That’stheconflictbetweengodanddevil.Godanddevil
arejustmetaphors;thedevilmeansthedark,theunconscious,themechanical.Andmanistorn
apart.Wheretogo?
Thereisonlyonepossibilitytogobeyondit,andthatistobecomefullyconscious...becausewe
cannotgoback.Thepathsimplydisappears,thebridgeisnomorethere;youcannotgoback.Man
hastriedinathousandandonewaystogoback.
That’swhyalcoholissoimportant,that’swhydrugsofallkindsfromsomatoLSD,havegreatappeal,
becausetheygiveyouamomentaryfeelingasifyouhaveagainbecomepartofthisnatureThey
helpyouchemicallytoforgetyoursmallconsciousisland.Againyoubecomethevastcontinent,
one,andacertainunityandacertainorganicness...andnaturallythereisjoy!
Butitismomentary.Soonerorlateryoucomebackandyouaremorefrustratedthaneverbecause
nowyouhaveknownakindofunity;nowyouwillbemorefrustratedinyourordinarylife.That’s
whathappenstopeoplewhoaredrunkards:theyarehappyonlywhentheyarenot,whentheyare
unconscious;theyareunhappywhentheyare.
Andthereisnowaytodropitpermanently–thisconsciousness.Ithasalreadyhappened,thereis
nowaytounlearnit...anditisgoodthatthereisnowaytounlearnitotherwisethemajorpartof
humanitywouldhaveunlearnedit.Becausethereisnowaytoregressonecanonlygoahead.Yes,
unitycanbeattained,butonanewplane,asanewbeing,asatotallynewbeing,asabuddha...as
anawakenedsoul.
That’swhyallthereligionshavebeenagainstdrugs.Notthattheyareagainstdrugs:theyare
againstdrugsbecausedrugsgiveyouanillusionofunity.Itisjustillusory,likeadream,achemical
projectionoftheparadiselost.Youhaveafeelingthatitisregainedthroughdrugsbutitisnotreally
regainedbecauseyoufallbackagainandagain.Itneverbecomesyourverybeing,andunless
paradisebecomesyourverybeing,itismeaningless.
Unlessyoubecomeparadise,unlessyoubecomegod,itismeaningless.Justthroughadrugtrip
thefeelingthat’Iamgod’,isjustmegalomania.Youaretrickingyourself,youarebefoolingyourself
anddestroyingagreatopportunity.Thesametimeandthesameenergycanbeputtotheonlywork,
theonlyworkthatisworthwhile–thatis,howtotransformthewholebeingintoconsciousness.
Ifasmallparthasbecometransformeditisindicativethatitispossibleforthewholeconsciousness.
Itispossible,thatmuchiscertain,becauseasmallparthasalreadybecomeconscious–thetipof
theiceberg.Butifthetipcancomeoutoftheoceanwhynotthewholeiceberg?Thereseemstobe
nointrinsicdifficulty;onejusthastoputone’senergiesintoit.

AndIcanseegreatpossibilitiesinyou,soratherthanputtingyourenergiesintosmalltrivia,direct
yourenergiestowardsonlyonething,andthatishowtobecomemoreaware,howtobecomemore
alert,howtoliveinaconsciousway,deliberatelyconscious.
Inthebeginningyouhavetomakeanefforttobeconscious.Oncetheeffortpenetratesandhas
transformedanotherchunkofyourbeing,thenyoucanforgetaboutit.itremainsconscious.Once
itbecomesconscious,itremainsconscious;itcannotfallback–thereisnowaytofallback.Then
youcanworkonanotherchunkofyourbeing,andslowly,slowly,inchbyinchonestartspenetrating
one’sownpalace.Andthedeeperyougo,themoreblissfulyoubecome.Thedayyourwholebeing
isfulloflightisthedayofrejoicing!
That’swhatjesusmeanswhenhesays,’Thekingdomofgodiswithinyou.Butbeawake,’herepeats
athousandandonetimes.’Beawake,remainawake!’
Onetimesomebodyasked’Whatdoyoumeanbyit?’Hesaid,’Itislikethemanwhowentona
longjourney.Hetoldhisservants,”RemainawakebecauseIcancomebackanytimeandIwould
notlikeyoutobeasleepwhenIcome.”Hedidnottellthemwhenhewouldbecoming–tomorrow,
thedayaftertomorrow,thismonth,nextmonth,thisyearorthenextyear.Theservantshadtobe
continuouslyalertbecausethemastercouldcomeanymoment!’Jesussaid’Likethat,godcan
comeanymomentintoyou.Bealert!’Infact,bybeingalertyousendaninvitationtogod.
By’god’Isimplymeanalltheenergythathasalreadybecomeconsciousinexistence.Idon’t-mean
thechristiangod,onewhohascreatedtheworld–no,alltheenergyallthebuddhas.Christisa
buddha,soismohammed.Theenergyofallthepeoplewhohavebecomeenlightenedistherein
existence...goesonincreasing.Eachenlightenedpersonpourshisbeingintoit;that’swhatgodis.
Thetotalconsciousnessthathasalreadyhappenedinexistence–that’swhatgodis.
Ifyoumakeeffortstobecomeaware,thatawarenessstartsflowingtowardsyoubecausethesame
attractsthesame.Ifyouareunconsciousthentheunconsciousflowstowardsyoubecausethesame
attractsthesame.Sojustasmallefforttobecomeconsciousandyouwillfindmoreishappening
thanyouaremakingeffortfor...andthat’swhereyoustartfeelinggod’shelp,neverotherwise.
Whenyoumakeasmalleffortandyouseethattheresultistoomuch,morethantheeffortmade,
somethingplus,thenforthefirsttimeyoubecomeawarethatgodisflowingtowardsyou.Youreffort
bringssomething,butsomethingmoreishappeningforwhichyouhavenotmadeanyeffortatall,
that’swhatiscalledgrace.Whentheultimatehappensitisnotmathematicallyproportionatetoyour
efforts;youreffortsareverytiny.Youhadaskedonlyforadropandthewholeoceanpoursintoyour
being.
Andonethingmoreaboutbuddhathatwillbehelpfultoyou....Buddhaistheonlyenlightenedperson
intheworldwhohasnotgivenanyouterstructuretobefollowed.Hehasgiventotalfreedom.Heis
notlikemoses;hehasnocommandments.Heneversays,’Dothis,don’tdothat.’Thosedosand
don’tsmaybegoodforschoolchildrenbutnotforgrown-uppeople.Andtheworldhasreallygrown
up,hencemosesislosinghishold,seemsoutofdate.Buddhaisgainingahold...seemstobevery
veryrelevanttothemodernmind.
Twothousand,fivehundredyearshavepassedbutthemansuddenlyisbecomingcontemporary!
Nobodyelseissocontemporary:krishnaisnotsocontemporary,mosesisnotsocontemporary,not

evenjesusisascontemporaryasbuddha.Buddhahasatremendousquality,atremendousappeal
forthemodernconsciousness,andthereasonisthathehasnooutercharactertoimpose.Hesimply
saysonlyonethinghastobelearned,andthatisawareness;everythingwilltakecareofitself.Be
alertandnothingcangowrong.Beunconsciousandgoonfollowingallthecommandmentsand
everythingwillgowrong.
Anunconsciouspersoncannotbeexpectedtodoright–that’swhatBuddha’smessageis–
soitisstupidtoteachpeopletodothisandtodothat,becausetheyareunconsciousandin
unconsciousnessnothingrightispossible.Anunconsciousmantendstodothingswrong.Even
ifyougivehimgoldhewillturnitintomud;hisverytouchpollutes.Hisveryunconsciousnessis
poisonous,soitismeaninglesstoteachmantobecomevirtuous;hecannot.Ifhebecomesvirtuous
withoutbeingconscioushewillsimplybecomerighteous.Thatwillbeanegotripandhewillbecome
moreunconsciousthroughit.
SoBuddhadoesnotwantonetobecomevirtuous–hewantsonetobecomeaware...andthen
virtuefollows,butithasatotallydifferentquality;youarenotimposingit.
Onegreatzenmaster,Rinzai,saidtohisdisciples–thiswashislastmessage–’Ifonyourwayyou
meetthebuddha,killhim....Oyou,disciplesofthetruth,makeanefforttofreeyourselvesfrom
everyobject.Oyou,withtheeyesofmoles!Isaytoyou:NoBuddha,NoTeaching,NoDiscipline!
’Whatareyouceaselesslylookingforinyourneighbour’shouse?Whatthenislackingtoyouin
yourselves?Thatwhichyouhaveatthismomentdoesnotdifferfromthatofwhichthebuddhais
made.’
Buddhaisthegreatestliberator.Hisownlastmessagetohisdiscipleswas,’Bealightuntoyourself.
Buddhascanonlypointtheway.’
Ialsodon’tgiveanydisciplinetomydisciples.Idon’tinitiateyouintoanykindofcharacter,pattern,
shoulds;Idon’tgiveyouanyideals.Isimplygiveyouonesmallthingthathasto,beworkedout
withinyourheart–andthatistobemorealert.Dowhatsoeveryouwanttodo:doitwithmore
consciousness.
Walkingontheroad,walkmoreconsciously;keepalertthatyouarewalking.Breathing,doing
nothing,justbreatheconsciousthatyouarebreathing.Thebreathisgoingin–beconsciousofit;
thebreathisgoingout–beconsciousofit.
Makeeveryopportunityadevicetobecomemoreconscious,andsoonmoreandmore
consciousnesswillbeflowinginyou,willbefloodingyou...morethanyouwereworkingfor.Then
youwillseethehandsofthedivinehelpingyou.Andoncethosehandshavebeenseen,trustarises.
Thenyouknowthatyouarenotalone.
Allthosewhohaveeverbecomeenlightenedarebehindyou.Muchisatstakeinyou.Itisnotonlya
questionofyourindividualliberation:thewholeexistenceisinvolvedinyou.Ifyoubecomeliberated
thewholeexistenceisgoingtobecomeenriched.Soitisnotthequestiononlyofbeingselfish–
thatonewantstobecomepeaceful,wantstoattainsamadhi,wantstoattainthisandthat;thisisnot
simplyselfish.Itisthegreatestaltruisticactonecando–tobecomeaware–becausebybecoming
