The INTERTEXT series has been specifically designed to meet the needs of
contemporary English Language Studies.
Working with Texts: A core intro-
duction to language analysis
(second edition, 2001) is the foundation text,
which is complemented by a range of ‘satellite’ titles. These provide students
with hands-on practical experience of textual analysis through special topics,
and can be used individually or in conjunction with
Working with Texts
.
The Language of War
:
e
explores how military discourse has entered mainstream language use
e
focuses on how language is used to construct opposing sides during
armed conflict
e
analyses the interaction between verbal and visual language in military
propaganda
e
compares and contrasts media coverage of war with the language of
official reports
e
draws on an eclectic range of military and non-military texts from a
wide variety of sources
Steve Thorne
studied as a mature student at the University of Birmingham
and was awarded a Ph.D. in English in 2003. He currently works as an
Essential Skills Team Leader at Birmingham Rathbone as well as a Visiting

The Intertext series
The Routledge INTERTEXT series aims to develop readers’ understanding of
how texts work. It does this by showing some of the designs and patterns
in the language from which they are made, by placing texts within the
contexts in which they occur, and by exploring relationships between
them.
The series consists of a foundation text,
Working with Texts: A core
introduction to language analysis
, which looks at language aspects essential
for the analysis of texts, and a range of satellite texts. These apply aspects
of language to a particular topic area in more detail. They complement
the core text and can also be used alone, providing the user has the
foundation skills furnished by the core text.
Benefits of using this series:
e
Multi-disciplinary
– provides a foundation for
the analysis of texts, supporting students who
want to achieve a detailed focus on language.
e
Accessible
– no previous knowledge of
language analysis is assumed, just an interest in
language use.
e
Student-friendly
– contains activities relating
to texts studied, commentaries after activities,
highlighted key terms, suggestions for further
reading and an index of terms.
e
Interactive
– offers a range of task-based
activities for both class use and self-study.
e
Tried and tested
– written by a team of
respected teachers and practitioners whose
ideas and activities have been trialled
independently.
