Chapter One
HavingfinallyfinishedcollegewithmyDegreeinCreativeWritingIwasn’tsure, at first, what to do
with myself. Sure I wanted to write the next bestselling novel, but that would take time and I needed
a steady income to survive. I had been working part time in child care for the past four years, which
contributed to my decision to minor in child psychology along with the multiple childcare related
certifications I held.
Ihadregisteredwith‘NannyPoppins’ahighlyrenownednannyserviceinSeattlethreeyears
ago. My childcare experience started in a daycare, but I soon discovered that I needed something
more flexible. The nanny service provided this. I could give them my hours of available, pick up
more hours during the summer and holidays, as well as attend my full time college schedule so that
I could graduate within my four year goal. Being a nanny ended up being one of the best things that
ever happened.
Miranda, a close friend that I had found through the nanny service, suggested that I change my
statusto‘fulltimelivein’ She was positive that I would be able to get position with a family quite
fast and planned on putting the word out there herself.
Rand worked mostly for high profile homes, having been a nanny to some of the most elite persons
that Washington had ever produced. For the past three years she had been working in the Bishop
household for Dr. Collin Bishop, world renowned surgeon. He has been featured in People, Science
Daily, and Time magazines, just to name a few. So, Rand had some connections that she planned to
use in my favor. Neither she nor I knew at the time that I changed my status she would be moving on
from‘live-in’nannytosomething part time.
Miranda’sboyfriendoftwoyearsunexpectedlyproposedRandwaswonderfullysurprisedandhad
called me early the next morning to give me all the details. From their beach picnic to his garden,
bent on one knee, proposal, it was as cheesy and romantic as Miranda.
Four months later she put her resignation in with Dr. Bishop, so she could attempt to find a position
that would better suit her soon to be married status. When the agency called me to get my approval
to forward my profile on to the Bishop opening, I hesitated until I talked to Miranda. She almost
killed me for delaying, since she had specifically had my file requested. So, now I was in my old jeep
driving from Tacoma to Seattle, First Hill to be exact. My face was buried in my Map Quest directions
that I printed yesterday when my phone rang.
“Hello?”

She sighed.

When I turned onto 12th Avenue, I took in the heavily tree lined streets. There were a few visible
houses, but I almost missed my destination since it was a hidden driveway. The view of the house
was obscured by trees and bushes. I parked on the curb and climbed out of my Jeep. My eyes
widened the closer I approached the house.

Before I could knock Miranda opened the door with a large smile. She pulled me in for a quick hug
and whispered in my ear.
“Braceyourself”
I squeezed her hand gently and she showed me to a large dining room.
“MissAshwoodIpresume?”
I nodded and glanced from him to Miranda who was grinning.
“IamDoctorBishop” He put his hand out.
I took it and shook. There was a small shock between our hands.
“Sorry”Imumbled
“Yeswellletusgetstartedshallwe? Pleasetakeaseat” Dr. Bishop motioned to a chair across
from Miranda and him. I sat down and folded my hands on the table.

“Daddy?” I stopped speaking and turned to see a sweet pale skinned girl with curly red hair enter
the room. She was a young girl, but she still had the roundness of a baby in her cheeks. Her hair was
in large ringlets that flowed over her shoulders. With her blue and white striped dress she
reminded me of a porcelain doll. A small smile crept over my lips as I took in her appearance.

A throat cleared behind me and I made a silly face at Victoria. She giggled.

I winked at Victoria before I straightened back up.
“Sorry” I walked back to my seat.
