IfyoumeettheBuddhaontheWay...

Buddhameansonewhoisenlightened,andpremmeanslove–lovefortheenlightenedone,orlove
forenlightenment.
Buddhaisnotaperson–mm?itisastateofultimatebeing.Therehavebeenmanybuddhas,
andeverybodyispotentiallyabuddha.Theworditselfmeanstremendouslyawakened,absolutely
alert...onewhoseconsciousnesshascompletelydisappeared,whoisjustpureconsciousness.You
canlookthroughandthroughandthereisnodarknessinit...notevenlingeringsomewhereinthe
comers.
Hehasnobasementtohisbeing.Nothingisrepressed;heholdsbacknothing.Histrustwith
existenceisonehundredpercent.Doubtshavedisappeared...darknesshasdisappeared.Hehas
comehome.Thatisthemeaningofbuddha.
Butbygivingyouthisname,Iwouldlikeyoutobewareofacertaindanger.I’mnotsayingtoyouto
becomelikegautambuddha–themostfamousbuddha.Nobodycanbecomelikeanybodyelse–
andthereisnoneedto.
Eachindividualhastobecomehimself.That’showyouwillbecomeabuddha–notbyfollowingand
imitatingabuddha.Ifyouimitateabuddhaorachrist,youwillbeanimitation.Sothismaylook
paradoxicalbutitisaverybasicpointtobeunderstood.Ifonereallywantstobeabuddhahehas
nottofollowanybuddha,nottoimitateanybody–hehasnottobecomeacarboncopy.
Ifyoureallywanttofollowabuddhayouhavetoresistthetemptationofbecomingacarboncopy,
becausewhenyoubecomeabuddha,whenthefloweropensinyou–thenonlydoyoufollowhim.

Andthatwillnotbeanimitationofanything.Therehasneverbeenanythinglikethatandtherewill
neverbeanythinglikethatagain.Eachindividualisunique.That’showgodpaysrespecttoeach
individual.Hecreatesonlyuniqueindividuals.Henevermakescarboncopies–heneverrepeats.
Eachindividualisoriginal.
Thisimitationisverymuchatemptation.Mm?whenyouloveJesusyouwanttoimitate.Whenyou
loveBuddhayouwanttoimitate.Whenyoulovemeyouwanttoimitate.Butifyouimitate,youmiss.
Lovingmeorlovingabuddhaistogointoyourownself.Themasterhastothrowthediscipleinto
hisownbeing.Sozenpeoplehavetherightnameforthistemptationtoimitate;theycallitthe
buddhadisease.TheyloveBuddhatremendously,buttheycallthisthebuddhadisease.Mm?heis
sobeautifulthatoneisnaturallytemptedtoimitate,butthenitbecomesadisease.
ThezenmastersareknowntohavesaidthatifyoumeettheBuddhaontheway,killhimimmediately!
TheyworshiptheBuddhaeverydaymorning,evening–andtheypray.Andtheysayifwhile
meditatingtheBuddhaimagearisesinyou,takeaswordandcutitimmediately.Thenandtherebe
finishedwithit...otherwisethisfellowisdangerous.
Theysay,’IfyourepeatthenameofBuddha,washyourmouth,rinseyourmouthimmediately,
becausethisname,too,isdangerous.’TheyloveBuddhaandtheysaysuchthings! Itlooks
contradictory,butitisnot.
Neverbeimitativeifyouwantonedaytobecomeanofferingtogod.Alwaystrytolistentoyourown
heart.
Mywholeefforthereisnottomakeanythingoutofyoubuttosimplyhelpyoutobecomewhatsoever
youcanbecome–whatsoever!Ihavenofixedidea...Ihavenoideal.Ihavetosimplyhelpyouto
grow.
Mm?justlikeagardener:hehelpstherosebushtobearosebush,andhehelpsthelotustobe
alotus.Hedoesnottrytomakethelotusbecomearosebush.Neitherdoeshetrytomakethe
rosebushalotus.Heprotects.Hewaters...hegivesthemanure.Hegiveshisloveandwarmth.He
surroundstherosebushwithallthecarethathecan,justtohelpittobecomeitself.
Anandmeansbliss,shantimeanssilence.Andinthefinalanalysisblissbecomessilence,orsilence
becomesbliss.Theyaretwoaspectsofthesameenergy,twoaspectsofthesamecoin.Ifyouare
reallysilent,youwillbeblissful.Ifyouareblissful,youwillbesilent.
That’sthedifferencebetweenrealsilenceandafalsesilence.Onecanbeinafalsesilence–one
canforceoneselftobesilent–butthenonewillnotbeblissful;onewillbesomehowcontrolling.
Thenthesilencewillbeoutofdiscipline,practice,enforcement.Thatsilencewillberegimented
–justasinthearmyyoucanorderpeopletobesilent,andtheywillbe...unmovinglikebuddha
statues.Buttheyarenotsilent!Deepdowntheyareboiling...theyaresittingonvolcanoes.They
aresimplyfollowinganorder.
Youcandothesamethingtoyourself.Youcanbecomethecommanderandthecommanded.You
canforceyourself,youcantortureyourself,andifyoudoitlongenoughyouwillcometoattaina

certainqualityofsilence.Butitwillbedeadanditwillnothaveanyblissinit.Infactitwillbevery,
verymiserable.Itwillbeempty,negative.Itwillbemoresadthanjoyful.Itwillbeasortofdeath
shadow.
Therealsilencealwayscarriesabubblingjoy.Therealsilenceisadancingsilence.Therealsilence
istruebliss,andtherealsilencecannotbeforced.Youcannotregimentyourselfforit–youhaveto
understandlife.Themoreyouunderstand,themoresilentyoubecome.
Therealsilencecomesthroughunderstanding;thefalsesilencecomesthroughpractice.Thefalse
silenceisverycheapandeasy;therealsilenceisdifficult.Hencepeoplechoosethefalsebecause
itisveryeasilyavailable.Anystupidpersoncanhaveit–justalittletorturingofthebodyandthe
mind.
Iamcompletelyagainstanyfalsity.Itisbettertobetensebuttobetrue.Itisbettertobeangrybut
tobetrue,ratherthantobesilentandfalse,becausefromthetruethewaygoestowardstruth,but
fromthefalsethereisnogo.
Thefalseisadead-end.Itdoesn’tconnectanywhere–itbringsyoutoacul-de-sac.Youcannotgo
backbecauseyouhaveputsomuchinit,investedsomuchinit.Andyoucannotgoaheadbecause
thereisnowaytogo–justaprecipice.
Thefalsecanneverleadtotherealbecausethefalseonedayorothercomestoendsuddenly,and
theroadisnomoreahead.Youcannotgoback,becausethirtyyears,fortyyearspractising...mm?
thatgoingbackmeansyouhaveacceptedyourdefeat.
SoIseemanypeople–socalledsaints,religiouspeople–sittingthereattheendoftheroad,not
courageousenoughtocomebackandtosaytotheworldthattheyfailed,thatthepathwaswrong,
thattheireffortswereinvainandthat,please,nooneshouldgoagainonthatpath.
No.Ratherthandoingthis,ratherthanrepenting,ratherthandeclaringtotheworldthattheyhave
failed,theygoonteachingthesamepathtootherpeople.Theygooncallingotherstoo,sayingthat
theyhavearrived–come!
Fromthefalsethereisnowaytothereal.Fromthereal,thereisawaytothereal.Sorealangeris
better–atleastitisreal.Realanxietyisbetter–atleastitisreal.Iamnotinfavourofanxietyor
anger,butIamallinfavourofthereal.Atleastsomethingisinitthatistrue.Andifyouunderstand
yourrealanger,angerwilldisappearbyunderstandingandthetruthwillremain.Thisiswhatis
knownintheeastassortingoutthechafffromthewheat.
Whereverthereischaff,don’tbeinahurrytoburnit.Thereisapossibilitythatthewheatmaybe
hidingsomewhere.Firsttakethewheatout.
Inanger,angeristhechaffandcompassionisthewheat.Insex,sexisthechaff,loveisthewheat,
andsoonandsoforth.
[Asannyasinsays:Myparentsareverybeautifulpeopleandtheyareconcernedaboutmybeing
withyou.TheyneedtofeelthatI’mgrowinginchrist....AndI’mnottotallyresolvedwiththis.]

Thatneednotbeaproblem–youaregrowinginchrist.Beingwithmeisbeingwithchrist.Justlet
themunderstandthis.Givethemallthechristbooks.
Don’tfeelguiltyanddon’tfeelinanywaythatyouowesomeexplanationtothem.Justexpressthe
situation–thatyouaregrowinginchrist...becausechristisnotapersonatall.Ithasnothingtodo
withjesusandithasnothingtodowithrajneesh.Itisastateofultimateflowering.Intheeastwe
callitbuddha,inthewestyoucallitchrist,butitdoesn’tmatter.
Ofcourseyouarenotgrowinginchristianity–thatistrue–andthathastobemadeclear,because
by’christ’theymaymean’christianity’.Thentellthemthatitisnotgrowing.
Iamagainstchristianity,againsthinduism,butIamallforchrist.Infactyoucannotfindanychristian
whoismoreforchristthanIam.Buttheideaofchristhastobeexperienced.Justexplaintothem
lovingly,humbly.Thereisnoneedtoargue–becausethesethingsarenotforargument.
Iftheyloveyou–andIseethattheyloveyouandthattheyarelovingpeople–theywillunderstand.
Iftheycanunderstandlove,theycanunderstandeverything.Loveisvast.
Andtheirconcernisnatural–nothingwronginit.Mm?theymaybeworriedaboutwhatyouhave
chosenandwhereyouaregoing;maybeyouwillgoastray,maybeitwillbecomedifficult.Their
concernisnatural,andyoushouldbegratefulthattheyareconcerned.Theystillcareforyou...their
loveisintact.
Sofeelgrateful,andtellthemthatyoufeelgratefulthattheyareconcerned,butmakeitclear.And
thereisnoargumentinit–justmakeitclear...asimplestatementthatthisisthething,andthisis
yourwaytoreachchrist.
Iftheyloveyoutheywillunderstand,andiftheylovechristthereiseverypossibilitythattheywill
cometometoo.
Nobodycanreachchristthroughthechurch.Ithasneverbeenso;itisnotinthenatureofthings.
NobodycanreachBuddhathroughthepriesthood.
OnceIamgoneyouwillnotbeabletomakeanycontactwithmethroughsomebodyelse–an
organisation,priests,apostles...theywon’thelp.Theonlywaywillbeeithertobedirectlywithme
–whichneedsrareawareness–orgotoalivingmasterwhomaynotevenhaveheardaboutme,
andtobewithhim.Eitheryouhavetheawarenesstocontactmedirectlyoryoucomeincontact
withsomebodywhohasthatawareness.Hemaynothaveheardaboutme–thatisnotthepoint–
butthroughhispresenceyouwillbeimmediatelyconnectedwithme.Hewillfunctionasabridge.
Masterswhoarenomoreontheearthcanbeconnectedonlythroughlivingmasters–thereisno
otherway.Andasfarasmastersareconcerned,thereisnoChristian,noHinduandnoBuddhist.
Amasterisadoortotheinfinite,andtheinfinitehasnoadjectivetoit.
Soifyousimplyarethere,happy,flowing,meditative,praying....Letthemwatch,letthemjustsee
bytheside.Passingtheroomtheywillseeyouaremeditating;inthegardenyouaresittingwith
closedeyes.Letthemhaveatasteofsomethingthatisbeginningtohappentoyou–thatwillbe
