This month has been one of the busiest
months of my life. We have spent the last
three weeks settling into Australia and its been
busy, frantic, and crazy all at the same time,
but all in all, I still feel excited to be living in
this wonderful country where it is sunny nearly
every day!
On top of everything, the magazine must
still go out and I am thrilled to give you the
wonderful patterns in this issue. You will have
to excuse the absence of my own column due
to the above. The feature pattern is from
Twisted Oak Designs. If you have a young
one, then this would make a lovely birth
sampler. We start a new mystery series to get
you warmed up for Christmas. Four Li’l
Christmas Angels will be released over the
next four issues. Enjoy the first one.
The highlight for me was interviewing The
Dueck from The Victoria Sampler. She is a
wonderful designer and she has provided us
with a Christmas ornament pattern.
Have a wonderful month stitching.

Designer Profile - Thea Dueck - The Victoria Sampler
This month I had the great pleasure
of interviewing Thea Dueck from the
Victoria Sampler. I was thrilled when
she agreed to the interview despite
her busy schedule.
Thea is an enormously popular
designer who is known for her
beautiful timeless samplers that are
of heirloom quality.
Many of her designs incorporate
different stitches and the charts always
feature clear instructions.
Thea has provided us with an
exclusive pattern called Stained Glass
Ornament which you can stitch in
time for Christmas.
Thea Dueck was born in
Amsterdam, Holland, but moved to
Victoria, Canada when she was a
young girl. She had to learn English,
but enjoyed settling into her new
country. “Being Dutch and an
immigrant in my school had its
benefits. I was raised a Catholic so
our nuns made a fuss over you if you
were from a different country. Most
of my friends thought I was pretty
exotic at the time!”
During her young life, Thea was
surrounded by embroidery of some
form. In the evening she often sat
with her mother as she stitched and
mended. There she also watched her
grandmother and aunties embroider.
Thea started embroidering during
the late 1960’s by teaching herself
from magazines. After her daughters
were born, she spent many “waiting”
hours sewing and completing other
creative hobbies. One day while
visiting her sister-in-law in Vancouver,
she was shown a lovely shop with
counted cross stitch in it. From that
day on Thea was hooked.
Inspiration to start designing cross
stitch came from an itch to try
something different craft-wise. “One
day while browsing in a craft store, I
found a packet that included some
see through plastic sheets with a
permanent graph grid on it, and a
booklet which showed a bit about
designing for cross stitch. I took it
home, and the rest really is history.”
Thea started with patterns based
on photos from around Victoria.
These she kitted up and sold to
tourists. “I was busy learning
accounting, creating designs, and
selling the kits locally, for at least five
years before I found another love,
samplers. My first sampler was
the Friendship Tree, and it was
designed for a Vancouver Guild
meeting, as a gift from me and the
shop owner I worked for. When I
saw one of the other teachers stitching
it during her breaks, I was hooked
on the idea of speciality stitches, and
within a year I had named my new
business, The Victoria Sampler.”
Thea has now designed for 17
years, and for the last 12 of these she
has incorporated speciality stitches
into her patterns.
Today Thea mainly designs
samplers and takes her inspiration
from many things including antique
samplers, folk art, Elizabethan
flowers, white on white hardanger
and drawn thread designs. She is also
inspired by the “stitcher” and what
is important to them. “I'm usually
inspired by a pithy quote, a small
verse or a saying reflecting what I
think is important. People's special
celebrations draw my ideas like a
magnet. I enjoy designing for a
reason, so that people also have

Designer Profile continue...
reasons to stitch them. I love themes
like Christmas, birthdays, ann-
iversaries, but also absolutely love
gardens, and I don't need an excuse
to design with flowers in mind!”
A huge influence on Thea’s work
is her desire to teach other stitchers
something new. “I think that I
absolutely love to teach others, so
my patterns often include a few new
techniques... to encourage others to
at least try them. I also design a
number of pieces for teaching and
these designs are being taught either
in person, or online in our
Cyberclasses. We often have students
from many other countries, besides
our Canadian and US stitchers.
Cyberclasses at our website is a
wonderful way to spread the joy of
stitching far and wide!”
For the future, Thea can’t think of
anything else she would rather do
than design needlework! She
encourages people to support their
needlework shops and is looking
forward to continuing her stitcher
friendships and designing for many
more years to come.
“I hope stitchers will experience
their own creativity and sense of
beauty as they are stitching my
designs. I want them to feel happy,
and to feel that the colours they are
stitching is fun and exciting. I hope
they love the variety of different
stitches and fibers, so that they are
always excited by the new blank
fabric.”
