Tobecomemeanstobecomefalse.Tobecomemeanstobecomethatwhichyouarenot.Tobeis
alreadythecase.Manhasnottobecomeanythingotherthanheis,hehastorelaxintohisbeing
andknowthetruth.
Thetruthisalreadygiven,thetruthisnotsomewhereinthefuture.Itisnotagoalbutthesource.
Youarecomingfromtruth.Ifyoucanfindthesourceagainyouwillknowwhattruthis.Youarenot
goingtowardstruth;allgoingtakesyoufartherandfartherawayfromtruth.
YoumusthaveheardthenameofRadha.Mythologicallysheisknowntobethemostbeloved
womanofKrishna.Hehadmanylovers;Radhawasthesuprememost.Buthistoricallythere
hasneverbeenanywomanbythenameofRadha,andintheancientscriptureshernameisnot
mentionedatall.Itisaninventionoflatermystics,latersages,andithastremendoussignificance;
itwillbegoodtounderstandit.
InSanskritthereisaword,DHARA,whichmeanstherivermovingfromthesourcetowardsthe
ocean.IfyoureversethewordDHARAitbecomesRADHA.Radhameanstherivermovingtowards
theorigin,nottowardstheocean;radhaisametaphor.AndonecanbeabelovedofGodonlyifone
turnsthewholeprocessoflife–frombeingaDHARAonebecomesaRADHA,notmovingtowards
thegoalbutgoingdeeperanddeeperdowntowardsthesource.
Andthesourceiswithinyou!Thegoaliswithout,thesource,within.Thesourceisyourverybeing.
Butmindisaggressive–itwantstoexplore,itwantstogoonadventures,itwantstoknowthatwhich
isnotknown,itwantstodemystifyexistence.Itwantstoconquer,itisonajourneyofconquest.
Mindismasculine,basicallymasculine,andthroughthemindthereisnowaytowardsGod.
Onehastobecomefeminine.Onehastobecomereceptiveratherthanbeingaggressive.Onehas
tolearntheartofrelaxationratherthanlearningthestrategiesofhowtoconquertheworldandthe
reality.Truthisnotgoingtobeaconquest,itisgoingtobeatotalsurrender.Onehastobecomea
host,onehastoopenup,onehastobejustareceptivitysothewindcancomein,theraincancome
in,thesuncancomein.Andjusthiddenbehindthesunandtherainandthewindonedaycomes
theGuest.AndtheGuestdoesnotcomefromtheoutside,itariseswithinyou.GodistheGuest.
Butyouhavetobeahostfirst,youhavetolearntheartofbeingahost.Youhavetobecomea
welcome,youhavetobecomeaprayer,youhavetobecomeaninvitation,andyouhavetobecome
awaiting,aninfinitewaiting.IfittakesagesforHimtocomeyouhavetowait,ofcoursewithtears
inyoureyesbutwithtremendoustrustintheheart.
KabircallsGodtheGuestbecausehewantstheseekertobethehost.Themasculinemindcannot
becomethehost.Themasculinemindcanonlybecomeanaggressor;itknowshowtosnatch
thingsaway.Themasculinemindisadoer,agreatdoer,hencethemasculinemindgivesbirthto
science;scienceisbasicallymale.
Religionisfemale,andthosewhowanttoenterintotheworldofreligionhavetounderstanditvery
deeplybecauseitisveryfundamental.Ifyoumissthispointyouwillmissall.Youhavetobecome
feminine.AndwhenIsay’feminine’Idon’tmeanbiologically;itisnotaquestionofmanandwoman,
itisnotaquestionofphysiology–itisaquestionofyourpsychology.Youmayhavethebodyofa

That’swhatishappeningnow:manywomenareturningmasculine,becomingmoreaggressive.In
thenameofliberationtheyarelosingsomethinginfinitelyvaluable.Forthemundanetheyarelosing
thecontactwiththesacred.Thewomanhasalwaysremainedinasubtlewayconnectedwiththe
sacred.ThewomanhasbeenthecontactofmankindwithGod,butnowsheisbecomingmoreand
moremasculine.
Itisnotaquestionofphysiology,biology,remember;youmayhavethebodyofamanandyoumay
havethepsychologythatIcallfeminine,receptive.Buddhaisfeminineifyoulookathispsychology,
Jesusisfeminineifyoulookathispsychology.
FriedrichNietzschewasthefirsttopointoutthefactthatBuddhaandJesusare’womanish’.Of
coursehewascriticizing,hewasnotappreciatingthefact,buthewasthefirsttopointitout;he
hadthatintuitivegenius.Heusedhisgeniusinaverywrongway;hewouldhavebecomeaBuddha
himself,butheusedhistalentsinadestructivewayandreleasedthegreatestdestructiveforceon
theearthuptonow.
Fascism,nazismarenothingbutoffshootsofNietzsche’smind.Hewasverymasculine,he
appreciatedthemasculinemind:heappreciatedthesoldiernotthesannyasin,heappreciatedwar
notlove,heappreciatedswordsnotflowers,heappreciateddestruction,murder,conquest.Hedid
notappreciatethebeautyofsurrender,trust,love,friendship,no;thosewerenothisvalues.Hedid
notappreciatecompassion,ecstasy,celebration,no;thosewerenothisvalues.Hencehecriticized
BuddhaandJesus,moreparticularlyJesus.WhenhesaidJesusisfemininehewascondemning
Jesus.
IalsosayJesusisfeminine,butIamnotcondemninghim–Icannotappreciatehimmore.Tosay
JesusandBuddhaarefeminineisthegreatestappreciationpossible,becausetheyhavebecome
hosts,theyhavebecomeopen,vulnerabletoexistence.Theyhavesenttheinvitationandtheyare
simplywaiting.
ThewayofBuddhaismeditation,thewayofJesusisprayer,butthesearesimplydifferentnames
forthesamephenomenon.Meditationmeansbecomingsilent,utterlysilent,becomingano-mind,
andprayeralsomeansbecomingadeeplistening.Whatyouthinkisprayerisnotprayer.Youthink
sayingsomethingtoGodisprayer?Itisnotprayeratall!WhatcanyousaytoGod,whathaveyou
tosaytoGod?RealprayerbeginsonlywhenyoustartlisteningtoGod,whenyoubecomeutterly
silent,justalistening;thenmeditationandprayercomeveryclose.Meditationissilenceandprayer
tooissilence–justdifferentnamesforthesamephenomenon.
JesusandBuddhaarefeminine,andthat’swhatKabirwantsyoutounderstandandtobe.Kabir
usedtosayofhimself,”IamawomanmarriedtoGod,Godismylover.IamfortunatethatHe
haschosenmeashiswife,ashisbeloved.”HehassungmanysongsinwhichhesaysRAMKI
DULHANIYA–”IamweddedtoRama,IamweddedtoGod.”Kabirisgivingyoutremendously
importantinsightsinhissimplepoetry.
Thefirstthingtobeunderstoodisthatbecomingisdrivingyoucrazy.Youarenottobecome
anything,youarealreadythat.Youhavetoacceptyourselfandrelaxinthatacceptance.The
personwhoistryingtobecomesomethingisboundtoremaintense,naturally:theconstantfearof
whetherheisgoingtomakeitornot,theconstantfearofwhetherwhatheisdoingisgoingtolead

himtothegoalornot,whetherhehaschosentherightpathornot,theconstantfearofwhetherhe
isdoingenoughtoachieveornot,theconstantfearthatthereareotherswhomayreachbeforehim.
Becomingcreatesfear,becomingcreatescompetition,andbecomingdrivesyoucrazy,neurotic.
Becomingtakesyoufartherandfartherawayfromyourbeing.
Donotbecome...be,justbe.Becomingistherootcauseofallconfusion,miseryandanguish–
confusionbecauseinfactyoucannotbecomethatwhichyouarenot.Therosecantryasmuchas
possible,butitisgoingtoremainarose,itcan’tbecomealotus.Thelotuscantryhard,canpractise
allkindsofyogaexercises,butthelotusisgoingtoremainalotus,itcan’tbecomearose.Arose
isaroseandalotusisalotus.ButthelotusisbeautifulandtheroseisbeautifulandthereisNO
confusion,becausetheroseisperfectlyhappyinbeingaroseandthelotusisperfectlyhappyin
beingalotus.Onlymanismiserable.
Theonlybeingwhoismiserableontheearthisman,becauseheisnothappyinbeinghimself;he
wantstobecomesomethingelse.Wehavebeenbroughtupwiththispoison:”Become!”Wehave
beendrivenbythesociety,bythechurch,bytheparents,bytheteachers:”Become!”Nobodysays
tous:”Be!”Andifyoucanfindapersonwhosaystoyou,”Be!”thatisthepersontolistento,thatis
therealMaster,becauseheisgivingyouthemostfundamentalthing.Throughthatvisionyouwill
beabletorelax,andinrelaxationthereisclarity.
Confusionarisesoutoftheideaofbecomingbecauseyoubecomeaduality–thatwhichyouare
andthatwhichyouwouldliketobe.Youbecomeadualityandagreattension,andyouhave
todenyyourrealityandyouhavetoimposetheunrealuponyourself.Youbecomephony,you
becomepseudo,youbecomesplit.AndwhatIamsayingisnottheoretical;youcanlookallaround
–thewholehumanityissplitbecauseeverybodyistryingtobecomesomebodyelse.Somebodyis
tryingtobecomeaChrist,somebodyelseistryingtobecomeaBuddha,somebodyelseistryingto
becometherichestmanintheworld,somebodyistryingtobecomethepresidentofacountry,but
becoming...inthenameofreligionalso,becoming.
Thenwhatisthedifferencebetweenreligionandtheordinaryworldlyaffairs?Iftheworldlymanis
tryingtobecometherichestmanorthemostpowerfulman,andthereligiousmanalsoistryingto
becomesomebody–aBuddha,aKrishna–thenwhereisthedifference?Bothareinthesame
boat;thenameoftheboatisbecoming.
Thetrulyreligiouspersonisonewhodropsoutofthewholetripofbecoming,whorelaxesinhis
being,whorejoicesinhisbeing,whosays,”Iamthat”–AHAMBRAHMASMI–”Iamalreadythat”;
