TheMasterappearsonlywhenthediscipleisready.Neverotherwise.Innootherway.Atnoother
pointinlife’sjourney.Thedisciplehastobereadyandripe;onlyatthatmomentdoestheMaster
becomevisible.Thedisciplehastoearneyes,toearnears,tocreateaheart,tofeel.Howcanthe
sunappearifyouareblind?Thesunmayappearbutyouwillgoonmissingit.

Unlessyouhaveeyes,thereisnobeautyintheworld.Thevowerswillbloom,butnotforyou.And
starswillfilltheskywithimmensebeauty,butnotforyou.Unlessyouhaveeyes,thereisnobeauty
intheworld.
Ifyoudon’thaveloveintheheart,youwillnotfindthebeloed.Thebasicrequirementhastobe
fulfilled.Onlylovefindsthebeloved.Eyesfindbeauty.endtheearsfindmusicandmelodies.
Buttherearepeople,andtheyaremany–themajorityconsistsofthose–whogoonsearching
andseekingsomethingouttherewithoutcreatingacorrespondingreceptivityinthemselves.Ihave
comeacrossmanyseekerswhoaresearchingoraMaster–notatallawarethatthediscipleis
completelyabsent.Thediscipleisnotthereatall.HowcanyoufindaMaster?
TheMasterisnotjustanobjectivephenomenonTHERE.Firsthehastobesomethinginteriorin
you.That’swhatdisciplehoodis:apreparation,athirst,apassionatedesire,agreatpassionfor
truth.Thatislacking.AndthenpeoplegoONsearching.Andiftheydon’tfind,itisnotsurprising.
Theyarenotgoingtofind!TheymaycomeacrossMANYMasters,buttheywillgoonmissing.
HowcanyouseetheMasterifyouarenotvulnerabletohim?HowcanyouseetheMasterifyou
don’tknowevenwhatitistobeadisciple?ThebeginningofthefindingofaMasterstartsbybeing
adisciple.TherealseekerdoesnotworryabouttheMaster,whereheis.Hiswholeconcernishow
tocreatethediscipleinhimself,howtobealearner,opentoreality;howtofunctionfrominnocence,
andhownottofunctionfromthestateofknowledge.
Ifyoufunctionfromthestateofknowledge,youwillfindmanyteachersbutneveraMaster.Ifyou
alreadyknowsomething,andyouthinkthatyouknow,thenyouwillfindotherknowers,claimers,
whoareaheadofyou.YouwillmeetonlythepeoplewhomYOUCANMEET.Youwillmeetpeople
likeyou.Apersonwhofunctionsfromthestateofknowingthathehasgatheredwillfindmany
teachersandwilllearnmanythings–butwillneverfindaMaster.
TofindaMasteryouhavetobeachild.TofindaMasteryouhavetobeutterlyinnocent,notknowing
anything,themindempty–fullofpassionfortruth,butwithoutanyconclusionsaboutit.Thisisthe
stateofreallearning.Andthenyouneednotevengoanywhere:theMasterwillcometoyou.
TherearemanysannyasinsherewhohavenotcometomebecauseoftheirsearchbutbecauseI
havefoundthem.Theyhavecomebecauseofme,notbecauseofthemselves.ThatistheREAL
coming.Whenyoucomebecauseofyourself,youdon’tcomeatall.Youremainthere,stubbornly,
toomuchofyou,fullofyou–thereisnospaceformetoenterintoyou.
Thisisoneofthebasicrequirementsforaseeker:thatheshouldbealearner.WhatImean
by’learning’isthatoneshouldalwaysfunctionfromthestateofinnocence.Oneshouldnotcarry
conclusionsinsideoneself–becausethoseconclusionswon’tallowyoutoLearn.Ifsomethinggoes
againstthem,youareboundtorejectit.Andifsomethingdoesnotgoagainstthem,thenyouare
notlearninganything–onlyyouroldprejudiceisstrengthenedmore.
Ifsomethingagreeswithyou,thereisnolearning.Ithassimplystrengthenedtheoldmind.And
theMastercannotdoit–hehastodestroytheoldforthenewtobe;hehastotakeawayALL
thatyouhavebeencarryingallalong.Hehastocreatespaceinyou.Ifyouclingtoconclusions,

prejudices,ideas,philosophies,youwillnotbeabletomeetaMaster–becausehiswholework
consistsindestroyingallkindsofphilosophies.Heisinterestedittherealthing.Heisnotinterested
inspeculationaboutthings.
JusttheotherdayIwasreadingastatementofBurke:
Mostpeoplewillgrantthatpotatoesareimportant.Discourseaboutpotatoes,however,doesnot
enjoythesamepopularitydopotatoes.Whenthechipsaredown,talkaboutpotatoesisjustno
substitutefortheoriginalthing.Soitiswithreligion.
Ilikethestatement.TheMasterisinterestedintheREALpotatoes–notphilosophiesaboutthe
potatoes.Andifyoucomewithconclusions,youcan’tcome.Thoseconclusionsstandlikegreat
barriersbetweenyouandtheMaster.Onehastocomeopen,available.Onehastocomenot
knowing.Thisshouldbeobvious:ifyouknowalready,thenyouarenotavailable.Yourvery
knowledgeobstructstheway.
Becomeadisciple.Don’tbeworriedabouttheMaster.Whenyouareready,theMasterappears.
TheMasterappearsinstrangewayssometimes,butitalwayshappens.Wheneversomeoneisripe,
Godstartscominginmanyformstohim.TheMasteristhelastformofGodthatcomestothe
disciple.AftertheMasterthereisformlessness.HeistheLASTexperienceofform;Beyondhim
thereisformlessness–thenthereisGodwithnoform.
TheMasteristhelastwholookslikeyou,wholiveslikeyou,whomyoucantouch,withwhomyou
canhaveadialogue,whospeakslikeyou.BeyondtheMasterissilence–utter,absolute,virgin.
BeyondtheMasterisbodilessness.TheMasterisjustexactlyinbetweentheworldandGod.
Ifyouarereallytiredoftheworldandtherutandtheroutineofit,don’tstartsearchingforaMaster
–rather,searchhowtobecomeadisciple.Startunburdeningyourselffromprejudices,dogmas.
Forgetallthatyouknow....
RamanaMaharshiusedtosaytohugdisciples:Ifyouwanttobewithmeyouwillhavetounlearn.
Ifyoudon’tunlearn,thenIhavenothingtogiveyou.Youarealreadytoofull.
YouknowthefamousZenstory?
AprofessorofphilosophywenttoseeagreatMaster,andheaskedaboutGod,andheaskedabout
karma,andheaskedaboutthetheoryofreincarnation,andheaskedmanythings...questionsand
questionsandquestions.AndtheMastersaid,”Youaretired,thejourneyhasbeenlong,andIcan
seeyouareperspiring,cominguphillonsuchahotsummerafternoon.Itmusthavebeentiring.
Youwait;thereisnohurry.Thesequestionscanwaitalittle.Letmeprepareacupofteaforyou.
Andwhoknows?–whiledrinkingtheteayoumaygettheanswer.”
Nowtheprofessorwasalittlepuzzledandbecamealittlesuspiciouswhetheritwasrighttocome
tothismadman.”Howcanthequestionsbeansweredjustbydrinkingtea?”Butnowtherewasno
wayofgoing;hehadtorestalittle.”Andtheteaisnotgoingtohurtinanyway,sowhynotdrinkit
andthenescapefromhere?”

TheMasterbroughtthetea,startedpouringfromhiskettleintothecup,andwentonpouring.The
cupwasfull,andtheteastartedoverflowingintothesaucer,andthesaucerwasfull.Thenthe
professorsaid,”Stop!Whatareyoudoing?Theteawillstartoverflowingonthefloor.Nowthecup
hasnotevenspaceforasingledropmore.Areyoumadorsomething?”
TheMasterhadaheartylaugh,andhesaid,”So,youAREintelligent!Youcanunderstand.Ifthere
isnospaceinthecupthenwecannotpouranymoreteaintoit.Istherespaceinyourhead?I
wouldliketopourallthatIam,butistherespaceinyourhead?Isitnotoverfull,toomuchstuffed?
”Thisismyanswer,”theMastersaid.”Comeagain.Firstemptyyourhead.Comeinastateofnot
knowing.Youaretooknowledgeable.Icanhearallthenoisethatisgoingoninsideyou.Comea
littlemoreinsilence.Andyouhavenotcometolearn–youhavecometoargue.”
Knowledgealwayshankerstoargue.Itisnotinterestedinlearning.Inlearningitfeelshumiliated.
That’swhyitbecomesmoreandmoredifficult:themoregrownupyouare,thelessisthepossibility
ofyourlearninganything.Childrencanlearnbecausetheydon’thaveanyego,andtheylearnfast,
andtheylearnveryeasily.Ifyouhavetolearnthesamethingwhenyouarethirty-fiveorfortyor
fifty,itisverydifficult,almostimpossiblesometimes.Whathappenstoyourintelligence?
Afterfiftyyearsofexperienceyourintelligenceshouldbemorethanitwasbefore,butitisnot.You
havegatheredmuchjunkontheway.Thefunctioningoftheintellectisnolongerfree;itistoomuch
burdened–andburdenedwithcrap!Andyoufeelhumiliatedinlearninganything.Youcamlotbow
down.Youcannotsay,”Idonotknow.”Andthediscipleisnowhocansay,”Idonotknow–teach
me.Iamreadytolearn.Ihavenotcomewithanyconclusionstoyou.Ihavenotbroughtany
knowledge.Icomeempty!Fillme!”
TheREALsearchishowtobecomeadisciple,howtoemptythecupofyourbeing,sowhenyou
comeacrossabeingwhoisoverflowingwithGodyoucanbefilled–filledtoyourheart’scontent.
ButpeoplesearchforaMaster;theydon’tsearchfordisciplehood–that’swheretheygoonmissing.
Thenyouwillcomeacrossmanymanypeople,andyouwillalwaysfeelunsatisfied.Andthereason
fordissatisfactionisnotoutsideyou:itcomesfromyourowninnermind.Youhavebroughtcon-
clusionswithyou.
IwasreadingtheotherdayaboutaverybeautifulHassidmystic,Levi-Yitzhak.HewassofullofGod
andthesongofGodandthedanceofGodthatwhenheworshippedorprayedhewouldgowild.It
issaidabouthimthathesimplyradiatedthedivinedanceinitstotalwildness.Heworshippedwith
suchabandonthatthefrightenedfaithfulinstinctivelymovedaway.Ifhewasworshippinginthe
temple,peoplewouldescapetotheirhomes,becausehisworshipwasverywild.Hegesticulated,
howledanddanced,jumpingfromonecornertotheother,pushingandoverturningwhateverwas
inhisway.Peopleceasedtoexistforhim.Whenheprayed,hehimselfceasedtoexist.
Now,ifyouhavecomewithsomeconclusionsalreadyabouthowaMastershouldbe,youwillthink
hisamadman.IfyouthinkaMastershouldbejustsittinglikeaBuddhaunderaBoTree,and
thismadman,turningthingsupsidedownandrunningallovertheplace,andhehasscaredthe
worshippers,theyhaveallrunoutbecausenobodyknowswhatheisgoingtodo...Butthisman
wasaPerfectMaster.
