highseas.Hehasforgottenwherehewantstogoandwhathewantstobe.Butthememoryof
whathasbeenforgottencanbere-awakenedinhim.
Althoughthereisdarknessthereisnocausefordespair.Thedeeperthedarkness,thecloserthe
dawn.IntheoffingIseeaspiritualregenerationforthewholeworld.Anewmanisabouttobeborn
andweareinthethroesofhisbirth.Butthisregenerationneedsthecooperationofeachofus.Itis
tohappenthroughusandthroughusalone.Wecannotaffordtobemerespectators.Wemustall
prepareforthisrebirthwithinourselves.
Theapproachofthatnewday,ofthatdawning,willonlyhappenifwefillourselveswithlight.Itis
uptoustoturnthatpossibilityintoareality.Weareallbricksoftheedificeoftomorrowandweare
theraysoflightoutofwhichthefuturesunwillbeborn.Wearecreatorsnotjustspectators.The
need,however,isnotonlyforthecreationofthefuture,itisforthecreationofthepresentitself,it
isforthecreationofourselves.Itisbycreatinghimselfthatmancreateshumanity.Theindividual
isthecomponentofsocietyandbothevolutionandrevolutioncantakeplacethroughhim.Youare
thatcomponent.
ThisiswhyIwanttocallyou.Iwanttoawakenyoufromyourslumber.Don’tyouseethatyourlives
havebecomequitemeaninglessanduseless,totallyboring?Lifehaslostallmeaning,allpurpose.

Butthisisnatural.Withoutlightinman’shearttherecannotbeanymeaninginhislife.Therecannot
beanyjoyinhislifewhenthereisnolightinhisinnerbeing.
Thefactthatwefindourselvessuperfluousandoverburdenedtodayisnotbecauselifeinitselfis
useless.Lifeisoneendlessfulfillment.Butwehaveforgottenthepaththatleadstothatdestination,
tothatfulfillment.Wesimplyexistandhavenothingtodowithlife.Thisisnotliving,itisjustwaiting
fordeath.Andhowcanwaitingfordeathbeanythingbutboring?Howcanitbeajoy?
Ihavecomeheretotellyouthis:thereisawaytoawakenfromthisbaddreamyouhavemistaken
forlife.Thepathhasalwaysbeenthere.Thepaththatleadsfromdarknessintolightiseternal.Itis
thereforcertain,butwehaveturnedourfacesfromit.Iwantyoutoturnyourfacestowardsit.This
pathisdharma,religion.Itisthemeansofrekindlingthelightinman;itisgivingdirectiontoman’s
driftingboat.Mahavirahassaidforthosebeingsweptawaybytherapidcurrentoftheworld,with
itsoldageanditsdeath,thatreligionistheonlyislandofsafety,theanchor,thedestinationandthe
refuge.
Areyouthirstyforthelightthatfillslifewithjoy?Doyouwanttoattainthetruththatgivesman
immortality?Ifso,Iinviteyou.Acceptmyinvitation–forjoy,forlight,fordeathlessness.Itissimply
amatterofopeningyoureyes.Andthenyouwillinhabitanewworldoflight.Youdon’thavetodo
anythingelse,youjusthavetoopenyoureyes.Youjusthavetowakeupandlook.
Nothinginmanhasreallybeenextinguishednorhashereallylostdirection,butifhiseyesare
closedthedarknessspreadseverywhereandallsenseofdirectionislost.Byshuttinghiseyesa
manloseseverything;byopeningthemhebecomesaking.
Iamcallingtoawakenyoufromyourdreamofdownfalltothemajestyofanemperor.Iwishto
transformyourdefeatintovictory,yourdarknessintolight,yourdeathintoimmortality.Areyou
readytoembarkuponthisvoyagewithme.?
Beforewebeginourworkpleaseacceptmylove.ItistheonlythingwithwhichIcanwelcomeyou
tothelonelinessandseclusionofthesehills.Ihavenothingelsetogiveyou.Iwanttosharewith
youtheinfinitelovethepresenceofGodhascreatedinme.Iwishtodistributeit.Andthewonderof
itisthatthemoreIshareit,themoreitgrows!Realwealthincreaseswithdistributionbutthewealth
thatdecreasesbysharingisnotrealwealthatall.Willyouthenacceptmylove?Iseeacceptance
inyoureyesandthattheyareoverflowingwithloveinresponse.
Lovebegetsloveandhatebegetshate.Whateverwegiveyouitreturnedinkind.Thisisaneternal
law.Sowhateveryoudesireiswhatyoushouldgiveuntotheworld.Youcannotreceiveflowersin
exchangeforthorns.
Iseeflowersofloveandpeacebloominginyoureyes,andIamdeeplygratified.Nowtherearenot
somanydifferentpeoplehere.Loveunitesandtransformsthemanyintoone.Physicalbodiesare
separateandwillcontinuetobeso,butthereissomethingbehindthesebodiesthatbringspeople
togetherandunitestheminlove.Itisonlywhenthisunityisattainedthatanythingcanbesaidand
thatanythingcanbeunderstood.Communicationisonlypossibleinloveandinlovealone.
WehavegatheredinthislonelyplacesothatIcantellyousomethingandsothatyoucanlisten
tome.Thistellingandthislisteningareonlypossibleontheleveloflove.Thedoorsoftheheart

openonlytolove.Andrememberitisonlywhenyouhearwiththeheartandnotwiththeheadthat
youcanreallyhearanything.Youmayask,”Doesthehearthearaswell?”butIsaythatwhenever
thereishearingitistheheartalonethathears.Sofartheheadhasneverheardanything.Thehead
isstonedeaf.Andthisisalsotrueofspeaking.Onlywhenwordscomefromtheheartarethey
meaningful.Onlywordsthatcomefromthehearthavethefragranceoffreshflowers;otherwise
theyarenotonlystaleandfadedbutarelikeartificialflowers,madeofpaper.
Ishallpouroutmyhearttoyouandifyourheartsallowmetoentertherewillbemeetingand
communication.Itisatthismomentofcommunionthatthethingwordsarepowerlesstoexpress
iscommunicated.Manyunsaidthingscanalsobeheardlikethis,andthatwhichcannotbeput
intowords,thatwhichisbetweenthelinescanalsobecommunicated.Wordsareveryimpotent
symbolsbutiflistenedtointotalpeaceofmindandinsilencetheybecomepowerful.ThisiswhatI
callhearingwiththeheart.
Butevenwhenwearelisteningtosomeonewearefullofthoughtsaboutourselves.Andthatis
falselistening.Thenyouarenottruelisteners.Youareundertheillusionyouarehearingbutasa
matteroffactyouarenot.Forright-hearingitisnecessaryforthemindtobeinastateofperfect,
silentwatchfulness.Youshouldsimplylistenandnotdoanythingelse.Onlythencanyouhear
andunderstand.Andthatunderstandingbecomesalightandbringsaboutatransformationinyou.
Withoutthisstateofmindyoudonotlistentoanyone,youjustgoonlisteningtoyourself.Thetumult
ragingwithinyouabsorbsyou.Andwhenyouaresoengrossednothingcanbecommunicatedto
you.Youseemtobeseeingbutyoudonotsee;youseemtobehearingbutyoudonothear.
Christalsosaid,”Thosewhohaveeyestosee,letthemsee.Thosewhohaveearstohear,let
themhear.”Didthosetowhomhespokenothaveeyesandears?Ofcoursetheyhadeyesand
ears,butthemerepresenceofeyesandearsisnotenoughforseeingandforhearing.Something
elseisnecessaryandwithoutittheexistenceornon-existenceofeyesandearsisirrelevant.That
somethingelseisinnersilenceandwatchfulawareness.Itisonlywhenthesequalitiesarethere
thatthedoorsofthemindareopenandthatsomethingcanbesaidandheard.
IexpectthiskindofhearingfromyouduringtheperiodofthisSADHANACamp.Onceyouhave
masteredtheartitbecomesyourlifelongcompanion.Italonecanridyouoftrivialpreoccupation.It
canawakenyoutothegreat,mysteriousworldoutsideandyouwillbegintoexperiencetheeternal
lightofconsciousness.Thatiswhatisbehindthetumultofthemind.
Right-seeingandright-hearingarenotonlyanecessityforthisSADHANACampbutarethe
foundationofallright-living.Justaseverythingisclearlyreflectedinalakethatistotallycalm,
withoutripples,thatwhichisthetruth,thatwhichisGodwillbereflectedinyouwhenyoubecome
calmandstilllikethelake.
IseesuchsilenceandcalmcomingtoyouandIseeyoureyesinvitingmetosaywhatitisIwish
tosay.TheyareurgingmetosharethetruthsIhaveseenthathavemovedmysoul.Yourhearts
areeagerandimpatienttohearaboutthem.Seeingthatyouaresowillingandreadytohearme,
myheartisimpelledtopouritselfouttoyou.Inthesepeacefulsurroundings,whenyourmindsare
perfectlycalmaswell,IshallcertainlybeabletosaywhatitisIwishtosaytoallofyou.Itoften
happensthatImustrefrainfromspeakingwhenIseedeafheartsbeforeme.Doesn’tlightremain
outsidewhenitfindthedoorsofyourhouseclosed?InthesamewayIoftenstandoutsidemanya
house.Butitisagoodsignthatyourdoorsareopen.Itisagoodbeginning.

Weshallstartthefive-dayprogramofthisSadhanaCamptomorrowmorningandbywayof
introductionIwouldnowliketosayafewthings.
Forone’ssadhana,fortherealizationoftruth,themindhastobepreparedinthewayoneprepares
thesoilforthecultivationofflowers.Andso,Iwouldlikeyoutobearafewmaximsinmind.
Thefirstmaximis:liveinthepresent.DuringtheCampdonotbecarriedawaybyyourhabitof
thinkingaboutthepastandthefuture.Ifyouallowyourselftobecarriedaway,thelivingmoment,
thereallyimportantthingwillbewastedandwillpassawayuselessly.Neitherthepastnorthefuture
exists.Thepastinonlymemory;thefuture,imagination.Onlythepresentisrealandalive.Andif

pasthasbeencutadrift.Dietothepast.Andinthemorninggetupasanewman,becauseitisa
newmorning.Lethimwhowenttobednotawaken.Lethimgotosleepforgood.Lethimwhois
ever-newandever-fresharise.
Toliveinthepresent,keepremembering–andstayonguardtwenty-fourhourseverydaytosee
thatmechanicalthinkingaboutthepastandfuturedoesnotstartupagain.Watchingisenough.If
youwatch,itwon’tstartupagain.Watchingandawarenessbreakthehabit.
Thesecondmaximis:livenaturally.Man’sentirebehaviorisartificialandtheresultofconditioning.
Wealwayswrapourselvesinaphonymantleandbecauseofthiscoveringwegraduallyforgetour
realbeing.Shedthisfalseskinandthrowitaway.Wehavenotgatheredheretostageadramabut
toknowandtoseeourselvesaswereallyare.Justasactorsinaplayremovetheircostumesand
makeupandputthemasideaftertheperformance,inthesefiveday,youmustremoveyourfalse
masksandsetthemaside.Letthatwhichisfundamentalandnaturalinyoucomeout–andlivein
it.One’ssadhana,one’spath,developesonlythroughsimpleandnaturalliving.Duringthedaysof
thisSadhanaCampbeawarethatyouholdnoposition,havenoprofession,havenostatus.Divest
yourselfofallthesemasks.Youaresimplyyou,quiteanordinaryhumanbeingwithnoname,no
status,noclass,nofamily,nocaste–anamelessperson,averyordinaryindividual.Youhaveto
learntolivelikethisbecauseinrealitythisiswhatyouare.
Thethirdmaximis:livealone.One’ssadhanaisbornincompletealoneness,whenoneisallalone.
Butgenerallymanisneveralone.Heisalwayssurroundedbyothers.Andifthereisnocrowd
aroundhimontheoutside,heisinthemidstofacrowdinside.Thiscrowdhastobedispersed.
Inside,donotallowthingstocrowdinonyou.Andthesameistruefortheoutside–livebyyourself
asifyouareallaloneatthisCamp.Youdon’thavetomaintainrelationswithanyoneelse.In
themidstofthesecountlessrelationshipsyouhaveforgottenyourselves.Alltheserelationships–
enemyorfriend,fatherorson,wifeorhusband–havesoengulfedyouthatwithinyourselfyoucan
neitherfindnorknowyourownbeing.
Haveyouevertriedtoimaginewhatyouare,awayfromtheserelationshipsofyours?Haveyouever
discardedthegarboftheserelationshipsandseenyourselfquiteseparatefromthem?Remove
