Tantraisfreedom: freedomfromallmind-constructs,fromallmind-games;freedomfromall
structures;freedomfromtheother.Tantraisaspacetobe.Tantraisliberation.
Tantraisnotareligionintheordinarysense–religionagainisamindgame;religiongivesyoua
certainpattern.AChristianhasacertainpattern,sohastheHindu,sohastheMuslimReligion
givesyouacertainstyle,adiscipline.Tantratakesalldisciplinesaway.
Whenthereisnodiscipline,whenthereisnoenforcedorder,atotallydifferentkindoforderarisesin
you.WhatLaoTzucallsTao,whatBuddhacallsDHARMA–thatarisesinyou.Thatisnotanything
donebyyou;ithappenstoyou.Tantrasimplycreatesspaceforittohappen.Itdoesnoteveninvite,
itdoesnotwait;itsimplycreatesaspace.Andwhenthespaceisready,thewholeflowsin.
Ihaveheardaverybeautifulstory,averyancientone.
Inaprovince,norainhadfallenforalongtime.Everythingwasdriedup.Atlastthecitizensdecided
tofetchtherainmaker.Adeputationwassenttoseehiminthedistanttownwherehelivedwiththe
urgentrequesttocomeassoonaspossibleandmakerainfortheirparchedfields.
Therainmaker,awiseoldman,promisedtodosoonconditionthathebeprovidedwithasolitary
littlecottageintheopencountrywherehecouldwithdrawbyhimselfforthreedays.Nofoodordrink
wouldberequired,thenhewouldseewhatcouldbedone.Hisrequestsweremet.
Ontheeveningofthethirddayabundantrainfelland,fullof.praise,agratefulcrowdmadea
pilgrimagetohishouseandexclaimed’Howdidyoudoit?Tellus.’
’Itwasquitesimple’therainmakeranswered.’ForthreedaysallIhavedoneistoputmyselfinorder.
ForIknowthatonceIaminorder,thentheworldwillbeinorder,andthedroughtmustyieldplace
totherain.’
Tantrasays:Ifyouareinorder,thenthewholeworldisinorderforyou.Whenyouareinharmony,
thenthewholeexistenceisinharmonyforyou.Whenyouareindisorder,thenthewholeworldis

disorder.Andtheorderhasnottobeafalseone,ithasnottobeaforcedone.Whenyouforce
someorderuponyourself,yousimplybecomesplit;deepdownthedisordercontinues.
Youcanobserveit:ifyouareanangryperson,youcanforceyouranger,youcanrepressitdeep
downintheunconscious,butitisnotgoingtodisappear.Maybeyoubecomecompletelyunaware
ofit,butitisthere–andyouknowthatitisthere.Itisrunningunderneathyou,itisinthedark
basementofyourbeing,butitisthere.Ontopofityoucansitsmiling,butyouknowitcaneruptat
anymoment.Andyoursmilecannotbeverydeep,andyoursmilecannotbetrue,andyoursmile
willbejustaneffortthatyouwillbemakingagainstyourself.
Amanwhoforcesanorderfromtheoutsideremainsindisorder.Tantrasaysthereisanotherkindof
order:Youdon’timposeanyorder,youdon’timposeanydiscipline;yousimplydropallstructures,
yousimplybecomenaturalandspontaneous.Itisthegreateststepamancanbeaskedtotake.It
willneedgreatcouragebecausethesocietywillnotlikeit;thesocietywillbedeadagainstit.The
societywantsacertainorder.Ifyoufollowthesociety,thesocietyishappywithyou.Ifyougoalittle
bitastrayhereandthere,thesocietyisveryangry.Andthemobismad.
Tantraisarebellion.Idon’tcallitrevolutionarybecauseithasnopoliticsinit.AndIdon’tcall
itrevolutionarybecauseithasnoplanstochangetheworld:ithasnoplanstochangethestate
andthesociety.Itisrebellious,itisindividualrebellion.Itisoneindividualslippingoutofthe
structuresandtheslavery.Butthemomentyouslipoutoftheslavery,youcometofeelanotherkind
ofexistencearoundyouwhichyouhaveneverfeltbefore–asifyouwerelivingwithablindfoldand
suddenlytheblindfoldhasbecomeloose,youreyeshaveopened,andyoucanseeatotallydifferent
world.
Thisblindfoldiswhatyoucallyourmind;yourthinking,yourprejudices,yourknowledge,your
scriptures–theyallmakethethicklayerofablindfold.Theyarekeepingyoublind,theyarekeeping
youdull,theyarekeepingyouunalive.Tantrawantsyoutobealive–asaliveasthetrees,asalive
astherivers,asaliveasthesunandthemoon.Thatisyourbirthright.Youdon’tgainanything
bylosingit;youloseall.Andifeverythingistobelostingainingit,nothingislost.Evenasingle
momentofutterfreedomisenoughtosatisfy.Andalonglifeofahundredyears,yokedlikeaslave,
ismeaningless.
TobeintheworldofTantraneedscourage:itisadventurous.Uptonow,onlyafewpeoplehave
beenabletomoveonthatpath.Butthefutureisveryhopeful.Tantrawillbecomemoreandmore
important.Manisunderstandingmoreandmorewhatslaveryis.Andmanisunderstandingalso
thatnopoliticalrevolutionhasprovedrevolutionary.
Allpoliticalrevolutionsfinallyturnintoanti-revolutions.Oncetheyareinpowertheybecomeanti-
revolutionary.PowerISanti-revolutionary.Sothereisabuilt-inmechanisminpower.Giveanybody
powerandhebecomesanti-revolutionary.Powercreatesitsownworld.So,uptonow,therehave
beenmanyrevolutionsintheworldandallhavefailed,utterlyfailed–norevolutionhashelped.Now
manisbecomingawareofit.
Tantragivesadifferentperspective.Itisnotrevolutionary,itisrebellious.Rebellionmeansindividual.
Youcanrebelalone,youneednotorganizeapartyforit.Youcanrebelalone,onyourown.Itisnot
afightagainstsociety,remember,itisjustgoingbeyondsociety.Itisnotanti-social,itisasocial;it
hasnothingtodowithsociety.Itisnotagainstslavery,itisforfreedom–freedomtobe.

Justlookatyourlife.Areyouafreeman?Youarenot:thereareathousandandonebondages
aroundyou.Youmaynotlookatthem–itisveryembarrassing,youmaynotrecognizethem–it
hurts,butitdoesn’tchangethesituation:youareaslave.TomoveintothedimensionofTantrayou
willhavetorecognizeyourslavery.Itisverydeep-rooted.Ithastobedropped.Andbeingawareof
ithelpsyoutodropit.
Don’tgoonpacifyingyourself,don’tgoonconsolingyourself,don’tgoonsaying’Everythingisokay.’
Itisnot;nothingisokay,yourwholelifeisjustanightmare.Havealookatit!Thereisnopoetry,
andnosong,andnodance,andnolove,andnoprayer.Thereisnocelebration.Joy?–isjust
awordinthedictionary.Bliss?–yes,youhaveheardaboutit,butyouhavenotknownanything
aboutit.God?–inthetemples,inthechurches.Yes,peopletalkaboutit:thosewhotalk,theydon’t
know.Thosewhohear,theydon’tknow.Allthatisbeautifulseemstobemeaningless;andallthat
ismeaninglessseemstobevery,veryimportant.
Amangoesonaccumulatingmoneyandthinksthatheisdoingsomethingverysignificant.Human
stupidityisinfinite.Bewareofit.Itwilldestroyyourwholelife.Ithasdestroyedmillionsofpeople’s
livesdowntheages.
Takeholdofyourawareness–thatistheonlypossibilitytogetoutofstupidity.
Beforeweentertoday’ssutras,somethinghastobeunderstoodabouttheTantramapofinner
consciousness.Ihavetoldyouafewthingsaboutit–afewmorethingshavetobetold.
First:Tantrasaysthatnomanisjustmanandnowomanisjustwoman,eachmanisbothmanand
woman,andsoiseachwoman–womanandman.AdamhasEveinhim,andEvehasAdaminher.
Infact,nobodyisjustAdamandnobodyisjustEve:weareAdam-Eves.Thisisoneofthegreatest
insightseverattained.
Moderndepthpsychologyhasbecomeawareofit.Theycallitbisexuality.But,foratleastfive
thousandyears,Tantrahasknownit,preachedit.Itisoneofthegreatestdiscoveriesoftheworld
becausewiththisunderstandingyoucanmoveinyourinnerdirection,otherwiseyoucannotmove
inyourinnerdirection.Whydoesamanfallinlovewithawoman?–becausehecarriesawoman
insidehim,otherwisehewouldnotfallinlove.Andwhydoyoufallinlovewithacertainwoman?
Therearethousandsofwomen.Butwhy,suddenly,doesacertainwomanbecomemostimportant
toyou,asifallotherwomenhaddisappearedandthatweretheonlywomanintheworld.Why?
Whydoesacertainmanattractyou?Why,atfirstsight,doessomethingsuddenlyclick?Tantra
says:Youarecarryinganimageofawomaninsideyou,animageofamaninsideyou.Eachman
iscarryingawomanandeachwomaniscarryingaman.Whensomebodyontheoutsidefitswith
yourinnerimage,youfallinlove–thatisthemeaningoflove.
Youdon’tunderstandit.Yousimplyshrugyourshoulders–yousay’Ithashappened.’Butthereisa
subtlemechanisminit.Whydidithappenwithacertainwoman?Whynotwithothers?Yourinner
imagefitssomehow.Theouterwomanissimilarinaway.Somethingjusthitsyourinnerimage,you
feelthat’thisismywoman’,or’thisismyman’:thisfeelingiswhatloveis.Buttheouterwomanis
notgoingtosatisfy,becausenoouterwomanisgoingtocompletelyfitwithyourinnerwoman.
Therealityisnotthatwayatall.Maybeshefitsalittlebitt–hereisanappeal,amagnetism,butit
