Friends,
Itistime,ripetimeforaZenmanifesto.
TheWesternintelligentsiahavebecomeacquaintedwithZen,havealsofalleninlovewithZen,but
theyarestilltryingtoapproachZenfromthemind.Theyhavenotyetcometotheunderstanding
thatZenhasnothingtodowithmind.
Itstremendousjobistogetyououtoftheprisonofmind.Itisnotanintellectualphilosophy;itisnot
aphilosophyatall.Norisitareligion,becauseithasnofictionsandnolies,noconsolations.Itisa
lion’sroar.AndthegreatestthingthatZenhasbroughtintotheworldisfreedomfromoneself.
Allthereligionshavebeentalkingaboutdroppingyourego–butitisaveryweirdphenomenon:
theywantyoutodropyourego,andtheegoisjustashadowofGod.Godistheegooftheuniverse,
andtheegoisyourpersonality.JustasGodistheverycenterofexistenceaccordingtoreligions,
youregoisthecenterofyourmind,ofyourpersonality.Theyhaveallbeentalkingaboutdropping
theego,butitcannotbedroppedunlessGodisdropped.Youcannotdropashadoworareflection
unlessthesourceofitsmanifestationisdestroyed.
Soreligionshavebeensayingcontinuously,forcenturies,thatyoushouldgetridoftheego–butfor
wrongreasons.TheyhavebeenaskingyoutodropyouregosoyoucansurrendertoGod,soyou
cansurrendertothepriests,soyoucansurrendertoanykindofnonsense,anykindoftheology,
superstition,beliefsystem.
ButyoucannotdroptheegoifitisareflectionofGod.Godisalie,outthereintheuniverse,and
egoisaliewithinyourmind.Yourmindissimplyreflectingabiggerlieaccordingtoitssize.
Religionsputhumanityinagreatdilemma:theywentonpraisingGod,andtheywentoncondemning
theego.Sopeoplewereinaverysplitstate,inaschizophrenicspace.Theytriedhardtodropthe
ego,butthehardertheytried,theharderitbecametodropit–becausewhowasgoingtodropit?
Theegowastryingtodropitself.That’sanimpossibility.Soeveninthehumblestso-calledreligious
people,theegobecomesverysubtle,butitisnotdropped.Youcanseeitintheeyesofyoursaints.
OneofmysannyasinswenttoseeU.G.Krishnamurti,andbecausehearguedwithhim,U.G.
Krishnamurtiimmediatelybecameangry.AndthesepeoplelikeU.G.Krishnamurtiaretellingpeople
todropanger,todropgreed,todroptheego.Butifyouprovokethem...Theirwholereligionisjust
skindeep.Insideishidingaverypiousego,andwhenegobecomespiousitbecomespoisonous.
Itismoredangerousbecauseyoubecomeabsolutelyunawareofit,itgoessodeepdowninthe
unconscious.
U.G.KrishnamurtilivedwithJ.Krishnamurtifortwelveyears,andhenevermentionshisname.
IfsomebodybringsupJ.Krishnamurti’sname,heimmediatelycondemnsJ.Krishnamurti–and
whateverheissayingisjustanimitationofJ.Krishnamurti,paraphrasing.Thereasonhecannot
acceptthefactthathehasbeenwithJ.Krishnamurtifortwelveyearsisverysimple.Themoment
heacceptsit,thenyoucancomparehisstatementswithJ.Krishnamurti’s,andyouwillfindtheyare
simplyparaphrasing.Heisrepeating,imitating,heknowsnothing.

Thesepeoplehavebeenaroundintheworldallthetime.Theyhavetriedwhateverthereligions
havebeentellingthem,buttheireffortcannotremovetheshadow.Ifthereisashadowofthe
bamboos,youcannotremovethebambooshadowsunlessyouremovethebamboos.Youcannot
directlyremovetheshadows;theyareaby-product.Ifthebamboosremainthere,theshadowsare
goingtoremainthere.Theycanbecomeverysubtle.
Ihaveheardastoryaboutafoxcomingoutofthecavewheresheusedtolive....
Earlyinthemorning,asthesunwasrisingbehindher,hershadowwasverylong.Shesaid,”My
God!Iamthisbig?Iwillneedalmostacamelformybreakfast!”Andshestartedsearchingfora
camelforherbreakfast.
Butthefoxcouldnotmanagetofindacamel.Itwasjustthemiddleofthedayandthesunwasover
theheadofthefox.Thefoxwasfeelingveryhungry.Shehadanotherlookattheshadow,andthe
shadowhaddisappeared.
Ithadnotdisappeared,ithadjustgoneunderneaththefox.Aslongasthefoxwasthere,theshadow
wasgoingtobethere–butnowitwasabsolutelyinvisibletothefox.Everybodyelsecouldseeit,
butthefoxcouldnotseeit;ithadjustgoneunderneaththefox.
That’swhathappenstoso-calledreligiouspeople.Theyforcetheirshadows,theiregos,theiranger,
theirgreed,theirambitions,intotheunconscious.Butintheunconsciousthesethingsarestillthere,
andfarmoredangerousbecauseyouarenotawareofthem.Youthinktheyhavedisappeared.
BeforemysannyasinstartedarguingwithU.G.Krishnamurti,hewasjustagreatsaint,sosilent,so
peaceful.Astheargumentbegan,hewasafraidtobecaught,hecouldnotanswerthequestions,
andangersuddenlyarose.Hemaynothavebeenawareofthatanger,butmysannyasinhelped
him!Hewantedtogetridofthesannyasin.
ItisU.G.Krishnamurtiwhoisnotanauthenticorsincereman–butyoucanfallintothetrapbecause
heisrepeatingbeautifulphrases.Hismemoryisgood,andhisintellectisgood,butthisisthe
shadow.
Eventheoriginalman,J.Krishnamurti,usedtobecomeveryangryjustseeingmysannyasins.Ihad
toldmysannyasinseverywherethatwhereverJ.Krishnamurtispeaks,youjustsitinthefrontrow.
Atthattimesannyasinswerewearingredclothes,theyhadthemalawithmyphotointhelocket,so
theywereabsolutelyrecognizable.
ThemomentJ.Krishnamurtiwouldseemysannyasinsallaround,hewouldforgetonwhatsubject
hewasgoingtospeak.Hewouldstartcondemningme,andcondemningsannyas.Thismanwas
talkingforhiswholelifeaboutawareness,andhehadforgottenthesubjectcompletely.Anditwas
notonlyonce...becausemysannyasinswereeverywhere.Whereverhewasgoingtospeak–in
London,inSanFrancisco,inBombay,inNewDelhi,inMadras–whereverhewasgoingtospeak,
mysannyasinsweretherejustinthefrontrows.
Hewassoallergictomethatthemomenthewouldseethesannyasinshewouldloseallcontrol.
Atsometimesheevenstartedbeatinghisheadsaying,”Whydoyoucomehere?Iamagainst

sannyas.”AndIhadtoldmypeople,”Laughjoyously!Makehimasangryaspossible!Thatwillbring
outtheoriginalmanwhichishidingbehind.”Hecouldnotevenunderstandwhythiswashappening
everywhere,thathewasbeingdistracted.Hewouldstartcondemningme,condemningsannyas,
andbecomealmostneurotic.
Seeingmysannyasinslaughingwasalmostlikeputtingmorefuelonthefire,andhewouldbecome
moreandmoreangry.Hecouldnotunderstandwhythesepeopledidn’tfeeloffended,butonthe
contrary,theywerelaughing.Hiswholetimewouldbetakenupbythesannyasins.
Itisveryeasytotalkaboutbeautifulthings,tohaveanintellectualgrasp.Krishnamurtihadbeen
forcedbythetheologiansofaparticularbrand,theTheosophicalSociety. Itwasaworldwide
organizationinthebeginningofthiscentury,anditwaspreparingJ.Krishnamurtitobeaworld
teacher.
Nobodycanprepareanybodytobeaworldteacher;anythingthathasbeenpreparedisgoingto
befalse.Theyalmosttorturedhiminthenameofdiscipline.Theygotholdofhimattheageof
nine,andfromthatmomenthewasnotallowedtomoveintheworld,hewasnotallowedtogointo
society.Hewascontinuouslyhammeredwithscriptures.Earlyinthemorningatthreeo’clock,he
hadtogetup,takeacoldbath,andbereadyforthetheosophists,theleadersofthemovement,
whowouldreciteSanskritscriptures,Tibetanscriptures,Zenscriptures.Andhewasalmostasleep
–anine-year-oldchild...Andthiswentonuptohistwenty-fifthyear.
Theymanagedtocreateacertainpersonality–youcanonlycreateapersonality–andtheyhad
thehopethattheyhadsucceededincreatingaworldteacher.Nowhewaswritingbeautifulpoems,
beautifularticleswhichwerepublishedbyasectionoftheTheosophicalSocietywhichhadbeen
createdespeciallyforJ.Krishnamurti.TheorganizationwascalledtheStaroftheEast,andthey
usedtopublishmagazines,periodicals,literature,allaboutKrishnamurti,creatingtheatmosphere
aroundtheworldtoreceivehimasaworldteacher.
Butitwasallforcedfromtheoutside.J.Krishnamurtihadnorealization,buthewasintelligent
enoughtograspslowlyallthescriptures.Hewashonestalso;U.G.Krishnamurtiisnotevenhonest.
Finally,whentheythoughtthathewasready,theycalledaworldconferenceinHolland–which
usedtobetheirgreatworldcenter.Sixthousandleadersofthetheosophicalmovementfromallthe
countriesgatheredtoreceiveJ.Krishnamurtianddeclarethathewastheworldteacher.
Hecameontothestage....Anditwasinaveryhistoricalmomentofhonestythathesaid,”Iam
notaworldteacher.”Itwasashocktothewholetheosophicalmovement.Itshatteredthewhole
movement.Buthehadbecomecompletelyfamiliarwithallthegreatliteratureofmysticism.He
dissolvedtheorganization,theStaroftheEast,whichhadbeenspeciallycreatedforhim,andhe
lefttheTheosophicalSociety,andlivedhiswholelifeinreaction.
Hewasagiantinintelligence.Thereactionwasagainstallthosepeoplewhohadforcedhimtodo
thingswhichwerenotcomingnaturallytohim.Hewasnotallowedtobenaturalatall.Hewasnot
allowedtomeetanygirls,hewasnotallowedtomixwithordinarypeople.Hewasnotallowedto
enterintoanyordinaryschoolorcollege,buthadonlyprivatetutors,sothathecouldbeprovedto
theworldasuperiorbeing,asifhewerecomingdirectlyasamessiahfromGod.
